Matt Kelty needs to find someone in his very inner circle and have a serious common sense discussion. They need to make some hard decisions about unloading some of the people within their campaign. The campaign is walking a tight rope right now of turning the "undecided" voter into a "decided" voter. Sadly for them, the new "decided" voter will not be voting for Kelty .I believe the legal charges will result in Kelty being found innocent. However these continued "brain farts" will drive away voters. His honorable loyalty to his campaign workers can only go so far. They are not being loyal by going off and doing things on their own. If his campaign manager is endorsing or approving these things, then she needs to go.
The cake, pictured above, should never have seen the light of day inside the party. The person who made it did Kelty great harm by thinking this would be funny. The person who posted the photos on Kelty's web site should have thought before they did the posting. Mr. Kelty these people, love them in you must, sure did not think about you when they carried out their deeds.
I am starting to think that any of the following may be taking place within his campaign. Some of Kelty's supporters think this is some kind of funny game. Some of Kelty's supporters have a severe case of a lack of common sense. Some of Kelty's supporters are just out of touch. Some of Kelty's leadership workers have no clue. Just maybe, Kelty himself has no understanding of just what is going on.
Kelty needs to find the right people to work with him in the final weeks of this campaign. He needs to drop the loyal bit, if he is serious about serving the residents of Fort Wayne.
I am sure someone in Kelty's campaign is reading all the local blogs and they will see that even people who supported him somewhat are starting to question him. Right or wrong, Kelty has to learn perception is reality!
The perception right now is of an out of control campaign, that looks more like a human train wreck.

I guess I would have to agree with your perception that there have been a few gaffes over the course of Matt's campaign, and I may be able to provide some sort of plausible theory. Matt Kelty has known from the very infancy of his campaign that he was an outsider, inasmuch as he was not the anointed candidate going into the primary, and his appeal to many Republican voters is based on that viewpoint. As time goes on, and Kelty continues to take fire not only from Democrats, but members of his own party (still outraged by the primary outcome), some of his supporters have become intensely protective of him, and at times, have probably overreacted on his behalf. As someone who calls Matt Kelty a friend, I have had to bite my tongue more than once when I see the continued relentless attacks on a very decent man. Not everyone is able to restrain themselves all the time however, and Matt's detractors have eagerly pounced on the cake issue because they can't gain any traction against his ideas for local government, and increasing numbers of people are seeing through the indictments as a largely political maneuver. During a number of discussions with me about his relationship with the local GOP leadership, Matt has repeatedly refused to criticize any of his self-appointed political enemies in my presence, and has expressed a desire to reach out to Nelson Peters. He remains one of the most decent men I know, despite all that has been said about him in the local mainstream media. I just hope he get the opportunity to prove what a good mayor he can be.

Mr. Kelty has an odd way of reaching out to people.
I think if you met Matt Kelty away from Fort Wayne and did not know him by face you would find him a pretty good guy. He would not come across stupid or many of the other things people have tried painting him. I think you would enjoy taking to him.
