This week three people will be traveling to sister city Gera, Germany on your tax dollar. Two will be looking for new employment after January 1, 2008 when the Mayor's term ends. The other one is a retiring council member.
Deputy Mayor Mark Becker will be leaving his job after December 31. Michael Joyner, who was appointed Director of Public Information on August 3rd, will loose that spot when a new mayor takes over. Council person Tom Hayhurst is retiring at the end of this year from the Fort Wayne City Council. By the time the party of nearly forty people return from Gera these three will only have 100 days left with the city.
Property tax payers could find better use of $6,000 then sending three short timers on what is little more then a vacation. The tax payers could have purchased 2,000 gallons of gas, fixed several miles of potholes and cracks in the streets, repaired some curbs, and maybe fixed a drain so water would not stand in a street.
The general argument that is often offered is they will lean valuable information in making Fort Wayne a better place. With only 100 days of employment left, the chances of that is slim and none.
It is hoped, as they board the big jet they at least look out the window to give the tax payers a smile and a wink. That way the tax payers got something out of this!
